Good Riddance, Mirapoint

June 27th, 2008

The Student Government at UC put out a poll asking students to contribute their thoughts on the future of the Bearcat Online system (student email - yeah they named it that). The results so far? They make me giggle and a little giddy.

Gmail incoming!

What sucks still? This doesn’t apply to employee email. It’s only for students.

But that’s alright, I guess. I already have gmail.com handle each address that belongs to me anyway. It’s cool.

GirlsDontGame.com has flourished and we’re all very happy about it. Plans for us to post media is in the near future - very near! - are coming to fruition and I think we’ll be having a lot of fun with it. Now to get all the girls playing a single game with each other, all at once. It’s difficult considering one works the late shift (moi), at least one is on the West coast, and another lives in the UK. Pity.

The great phone debate rages.

I’m trying to successfully upgrade the Samsung i730 to Windows Mobile 5, but that requires some fancy ActiveSync action and I have no fondness for that. There’s not much choice on the matter, however. Sync or Die, so says the gadget. No, you can’t run the installer on the phone directly. Okay, that’s cool - they at least have wonderful screen shots of every step in their documentation.

I’m trying everything I possibly can do avoid buying another phone entirely, and I’m not having much luck. Especially not since several new phones are tempting me, as it were. I plan to spend the next several days at the Verizon store just asking questions and playing with phones. I will tantalize their salespeople with the prospect of a juicy commission and then rip it from their fingers as I consult eBay for the final say.

I’ve tried being without my calendar on my person daily, I’ve tried to deal with a lack of WiFi connectivity, I’ve even gotten to love the small size. But I just can’t deal with the laggy software and featureless device that calls itself the LG Venus. Don’t get me wrong, that camera and picture messaging feature is great, but whatever - I’ve got a thing for bad boys; Transcriber stole my heart. Can’t go back.

I have several options in mind when it comes to new, or new-ish phones. Samsung is again in the lead with its WiFi, but mostly because I can’t tell whether the Palms support WiFi or not. I believe the 700wx does, but it’s running a version of Windows Mobile that I’m not entirely fond of, and the Samsung i760 has the hotter 6 Pro.

What I’m wondering is - will Android save me? I wonder, I wonder.

My Google Reader is overflowing with Kotaku updates, Engadget spam, and EDU news. Seeing the Google Reader new message notification capped at 1,000 for two months straight makes it hard to go in and read personally important updates, like those from friends. It’s time to sweep this out.

i730.jpgI’m thinking of switching back to the old Samsung SCH i730. There are so many drawbacks to this that I’m wary of it, not least because I tried to get rid of the darn thing for months. I’m going to list out my concerns and maybe someone can help me fix this predicament. The story? I have the LG Venus and it’s gorgeous, cute, gets as good reception as you possibly can on the UC campus (which is notorious for dropping Verizon calls), but its laggy software is driving me up a wall.

Samsung i730:

  • Windows Mobile software - works like a breeze, if you can bear the ridiculous amount of time you’re inevitably going to spend setting it up.
  • Cannot receive picture and video messages- need to go online and download them. I have visually chatty friends.
  • Will lose all data and all settings stored on it if you ever forget to charge it and it shuts itself off. I’m still butthurt over the loss of my contact list and German homework.
  • Great for media, sans the pix/flix txt issue.
  • Big as a brick.
  • Full keyboard is love.
  • Shaky reception, due to being their first ever PDA phone.
  • WiFi capable.
  • Difficult to text to e-mail addresses. Not that I do it often.

LG Venus:

  • Small, cute, trendy, pink, fits in the Louis Vuitton without a fuss.
  • Good reception on campus, better than the Samsung.
  • Extremely laggy software, the Venus OS makes the process of sending a simple message unbelievably complicated with accidental mis-dials and unwanted deletes.
  • No full keyboard.
  • No intarwebz that I’ve been able to discover.
  • Horribly small text memory, fills in a day or less even.

So what’s the verdict? Maybe I’ll just try each one. You can activate any phone on the Verizon network at any time you want apparently. Should I just wait for the open network and buy a non-Verizon CDMA? I have no clue.

You can do eet.

I attended a very good session at the UC Women’s Leadership Conference. Very many wonderful sessions actually, but this one really opened my eyes to something. The presenter said that she did the most important things in her life because someone believed she could do it.

Now, that’s a horrible paraphrase coming from the worst memory on Earth, but it has made me realize that I never would have accomplished so many things if not for someone asking me to do them. They asked me because they knew I was capable.

I want to upgrade, but I really don’t have the motivation to deal with the changes. It’s going to drop database tables, create new ones, move things around, have a completely different (and ugly) administrator interface and probably generally screw up.

On the flip side, it’s more secure, has some different functions, and has tag clouds! Yeah, I know Ryan. Tag clouds.

I am utterly addicted to this program. The only problem? I don’t understand it whatsoever. I attempted learning to write a script to control how it functions, but after failing miserably I decided to download some of the many amazing user-created scripts out there.

They haven’t helped me one lick to understand the concept, but I do know how to create the flare better. On that note - I am thinking success!

Spring

New guild, new people - I like them all a lot. This is pretty fun, yo. WoW is just a fun game again.

Every spring I have an urge to reconnect with a lot of old friends, and  see how they’re all doing now. I never end up doing it, however. This time around? Who knows. Maybe I will.  I see so many of them updating their MySpace on a regular basis, some have even found Twitter. I have honestly no clue what stops me.

I came to the conclusion today that I really don’t like designating titles to posts. Titles make me feel gross. How does that happen?

I keep looking at this cute little home I’ve created here, and I realize grudgingly that it needs an occupant. I don’t know what to do with this any more, if that hasn’t been painfully obvious. A blog simply demands a substantial post; the micro one-liners and short thoughts fit so snugly into my routine and personality. I think I may end up doing something a little more creative. Collage blogging or something. Oh hai creative thinking process, I’ve missed you.

Microblogging has, for a while now, been my only method of journaling. Oh, and on that topic, I’m starting to use the 5unshine twitter again, as I like it better than my own name kthx! Let that be an FYI.
